In the Glutide for Ending Methamphetamine (GEM) study, we want to see if a medication called semaglutide (brand name Wegovy) is safe to use for people who are trying to reduce their methamphetamine use. We also want to know if Wegovy is a tolerable medication to people who use methamphetamine.
Semaglutide is a medication that is used for weight loss and conditions like diabetes. Semaglutide is a medication that is used for weight loss and conditions like diabetes. Wegovy (the brand name of semaglutide being used in this study) is an injectable medication that has been approved to help people manage their weight. However, there is evidence that it could also be used to help people who use methamphetamine reduce their use. Semaglutide is also marketed under a different brand name (Ozempic). While they have the same active ingredient, the dosing is different, and we are using the brand name Wegovy for this study.
In this study, all participants will receive the study medication. Participants will get a shot of Wegovy administered by a study nurse every week for 12 weeks.

Study visits will include meeting with a research associate and nurse, answering survey questions, having your blood and other samples taken, and receiving the study medication injection.
Yes, you will be compensated for your time and effort. If you are eligible and complete all study procedures, you may earn up to $730 over the course of the study.
